“we, with love, shall force our brothers to see themselves as they are, to cease fleeing from reality and begin to change it.”

James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

There’s a sickness at the heart of the Democratic Party, a refusal to look the consequences of our collective moral failings in the eye.

It’s “let’s lock up everyone who is poor or sick” so that we do not have to live alongside the suffering of others while we work together on a solution.

It’s “let’s close down the Internet” so that we do not have to contend with the many ways we have failed to support young people and their parents.

It’s “let’s suppress student protests” so that we do not even have to hear the word genocide. So that we can move through life untouched by the reality of what is being done in our name.

And while many elected Democrats have embodied this trend, including members of both the Arizona House and Senate, there is one who stands out above the rest — the Governor. She may be known for her vetoes, but the bills she has signed tell another story.
